Trader Joe’s Sunflower Seed Butter

Posted on November 16, 2009 by Femme de Joie

Amico del Signore bought a jar of Trader Joe’s Sunflower Seed Butter. It’s a delicious alternative to peanut butter on a cracker with a little honey, on a stick of celery, or as a filling in a PB&J for those… Continue Reading →

Jim’s Picks: Harvest of Options

Posted on November 16, 2009 by Jim Dyar

Earlier this month, I wrote about the Carl Verheyen Band coming to Redding on Tuesday (Nov. 17). The show is still happening, but the venue has changed. Instead of Bernie’s Guitar, the show is now taking place at 7 p.m.… Continue Reading →

5 Thais – The Best Little Restaurant You Haven’t Tried

Posted on November 4, 2009 by Femme de Joie

Even a dedicated consumer of double cheeseburgers needs a break now and then. On a recent drab and drizzly day, M. De Joie was in the mood for a bowl of pho, that Vietnamese soup/meal-in-a-bowl with the healing powers normally… Continue Reading →

Traffic Safety Tips: Why Die Due to a DUI?

Posted on November 4, 2009 by Monty Hight

Being No. 1 is something that a lot of us strive for.  The No. 1 football team.  No. 1 on the record charts. Here in Redding we’re No. 1, and it isn’t good. We have a drinking and driving problem.  Redding is… Continue Reading →

Jim’s Picks: Chris Gaffney and the Cold Hard Facts

Posted on November 3, 2009 by Jim Dyar

I continue to be blown away by the treasures I’m finding from the late Chris Gaffney. Some folks knew him from the Hacienda Brothers who played several times in Redding. Others knew him from Dave Alvin’s band The Guilty Men.… Continue Reading →

‘Right-of-way’ means the right way!

Posted on October 26, 2009 by Monty Hight

There is a right way and a wrong way of doing things, and when it comes to driving, doing it the right way gets my vote.  I have received many concerns involving right-of-way violations. Merging into traffic, whether it is… Continue Reading →

Reflections in a Mirror (While Shaving): Part 15

Posted on October 26, 2009 by Doug Mudford

Looking in the mirror this morning, I thought of the photographer the day before, “Let’s shoot your good side”, he said. Using the crooked mirror behind me, I looked at both saggy profiles … I laughed …hell, shoot ‘em both.… Continue Reading →

Music, Mountain Biking and More

Posted on October 21, 2009 by Jim Dyar

Not enough blogs combine music and mountain biking. There should be more, don’t you think? I’ll do my best here: Music – Nathan James • The Nathan James Band plays at 8 p.m. Thursday at Lulu’s Eating and Drinking Establishment… Continue Reading →

Gene’s Drive-in

Posted on October 19, 2009 by Femme de Joie

Femme de Joie has found people tend to either love Gene’s with a passion or despise it with the hatred usually reserved for memories of high-school-cafeteria tuna-on-a-shingle. She recalls one person who described the onion rings as “made from turnips.”… Continue Reading →

Play Your Way to a Well-Trained Dog: Hide & Seek

Posted on October 19, 2009 by Carla Jackson

I could live in relative bliss with a dog that knew nothing but how to come when called. I mean the screech-to-a-halt, turn-on-a-dime, zoom-back-to-me-enthusiastically -no-matter-what’s-going-on kind of recall.  A reliable recall is the Holy Grail of dog ownership. OSHA Approved… Continue Reading →

  • Comment on Three Rabid Bats Found in Shasta County This Year; Practice Safety to Avoid Rabies by Steve
Pictured is a fruit bat (one of the flying fox species). They don't occur in the Western Hemisphere except in zoos. Unlike our insect-eating bats, they rarely carry rabies.
  • Comment on Just in time for Halloween and the holidays, REU brings one of Redding’s oldest streets into 21st century by Joe Too
In reply to Beverly Stafford. Holiday might be a bit more expensive, but the one on hartnell and shasta view is a very clean store with no bums in the parking lot like rally's. And, they make great sandwiches.
  • Comment on California Community Colleges Earn Wellness Coaches Designation by Frank Treadway
Kudos to Dr. Frank Nigro and his team for putting the request together for this valuable program for our local population in need. One more reason Shasta College is the fine institution of higher education for local grads.
