Not enough blogs combine music and mountain biking. There should be more, don’t you think?
I’ll do my best here:

Nathan James
• The Nathan James Band plays at 8 p.m. Thursday at Lulu’s Eating and Drinking Establishment in Redding. James is a country blues guitarist and vocalist extraordinaire. He’s come through town before with multi-instrumentalist Ben Hernandez, and this time he’s with his band. He played a house concert at “Rockin'” Ron Sullivan’s place last time he was here and blew everyone away.

Lance in Leadville
•This event directly competes with the above event, thus forcing me to pick a lane. A film called the “Race Across the Sky” about the Leadville Trail 100-mile mountain bike race will play at 8 p.m. Thursday at Movies 10 in Redding. If you have even a passing interest in cycling or endurance/adventure sports, you should check out the killer trailer for the film. Lance Armstrong competed in the Colorado race and it was filmed well. This is also interesting because it’s a one-time, one-day showing of the film across the country and I’m curious how well the grassroots spread of information went.

• U.S. Bank presents Broadway in Redding 2009-10 season kicks off with “Cirque Dreams: Illumination” tonight at the Redding Convention Center. A few different versions of the Cirque du Soleil show have come through Redding in the past few years, which indicates to me how popular these shows are. This is the only performance of the Broadway series that’s occurring in 2009. The remainder of the series goes like this: “The Wedding Singer” on Jan. 5; “Avenue Q” on Feb. 22; “The Drowsy Chaperone” on March 24; and “The Wizard of Oz” on May 10. If you miss tonight’s show, there are still four-show season tickets available for pretty good rates: $205, $195 and $110. Call 225-4130 or visit the convention center website.

• The Oaksong Society indoor concert series resumes this Saturday with the Alaskan bluegrass band Bearfoot at 7:30 p.m. at Bernie’s Guitar (3086 Bechelli Lane in Redding). Oaksong promoter Pete Angwin calls this a “hot string band” and considering Oaksong’s history, you can trust his judgment. Tickets are $18. Another great show, singer-songwriter John Wort Hannam from Alberta, performs at Bernie’s on Oct 30. The society has booked a bunch of artists for the winter. Check out their website for information.

• Redding’s Randy Miller, the drummer for the alternative rock band Myriad, is well enough to resume touring with the band. Miller’s battle with cancer has been documented quite a bit and this is an excellent development where it seems a lot of prayers have been answered. To read more, check out his wife’s blog.
