Posted on February 23, 2009 by Jim Dyar

Somehow I managed to correctly guess all the major categories at this year’s Academy Awards. For that, I won the door prize at the house party I attended with friends (couple bottles of wine, sweet!). I made last-minute picks, and… Continue Reading →

Reflections in a Mirror (While Shaving): Part 9

Posted on February 12, 2009 by Doug Mudford

• Tendency. Before anyone has finished criticizing me, I’m already thinking of a way to say it’s not my fault. I really hate that about myself… I blame my mother. • I’m just smart enough to know what I’m not… Continue Reading →

Mickey Rourke in “The Wrestler.” I finally got my wish and “The Wrestler” came to town. It’s showing at Prime 11 Cinemas in Anderson. I’ve long been a fan of Mickey Rourke and I’m pleased he’s been nominated for an… Continue Reading →

Dry River, Flowing Thoughts

Posted on February 2, 2009 by Jim Dyar

It’s starting to feel like that Dave Alvin song “Dry River” around here. “I’m just as dry as that ol’ river/and as dead as them ol’ trees.” Let’s hope that, “Someday it’s gonna rain,” and, “Someday it’s gonna pour.” I… Continue Reading →

Book Review: ‘Revolutionary Road’

Posted on February 2, 2009 by Shannon Calder

All fundamental truths I learn from fiction. This surprises many to hear and makes some question my intelligence. An editor once ended a conversation on this subject with a rather condescending, “You mean non-fiction. You’ve learned from non-fiction. Fiction is… Continue Reading →

Slumdog Movie Season

Posted on January 26, 2009 by Jim Dyar

I’ve pretty much written off the majority of the year when it comes to movies that visit our area screens. The major releases we’re offered generally come in one of three flavors — some version of “Saw,” some version of… Continue Reading →

Posted on January 22, 2009 by Doug Mudford

• I have a friend with a nervous laugh… he makes me nervous. • There’s a neighborhood cat I call Dog because he follows me to the river, fetches a toy mouse I bought him and jumps on my back… Continue Reading →

Reflections in a Mirror (While Shaving): Part 7

Posted on December 31, 2008 by Doug Mudford

• I sometimes get chided for mixing words or metaphors. I don’t get it. I’m running as fast as I can. • Names, faces, dates . . . not a clue, but I CAN recognize a great laugh, in the… Continue Reading →

A Small Year with Big Stories

Posted on December 14, 2008 by Shannon Calder

My year began in a small cottage situated near a field dotted with pygmy goats and three bossy ostriches. The time there was quiet and perfect and short. But in those brief months many wonderful pages were turned. Wow, were… Continue Reading →

Reflections in a Mirror (While Shaving): Part 6

Posted on December 12, 2008 by Doug Mudford

• My secretary is good. I wave my arms, talk incoherently, point and sputter and she completes my thought and hands me the correct file. • I like wine, but when my feet are held to the fire, I have… Continue Reading →

  • Comment on Three Rabid Bats Found in Shasta County This Year; Practice Safety to Avoid Rabies by Steve
Pictured is a fruit bat (one of the flying fox species). They don't occur in the Western Hemisphere except in zoos. Unlike our insect-eating bats, they rarely carry rabies.
  • Comment on Just in time for Halloween and the holidays, REU brings one of Redding’s oldest streets into 21st century by Joe Too
In reply to Beverly Stafford. Holiday might be a bit more expensive, but the one on hartnell and shasta view is a very clean store with no bums in the parking lot like rally's. And, they make great sandwiches.
  • Comment on California Community Colleges Earn Wellness Coaches Designation by Frank Treadway
Kudos to Dr. Frank Nigro and his team for putting the request together for this valuable program for our local population in need. One more reason Shasta College is the fine institution of higher education for local grads.
