Coping with Christmas

Posted on December 5, 2018 by Steve Towers

This “best of” article was originally published December 12, 2016. Christmas. I’m not the biggest fan. I’ve moved a safe distance beyond the days when my Grinch-like attitude was a downer for my wife Elise, who loves Christmas. I’ve learned… Continue Reading →

Posted on December 3, 2018 by Michael Jewel Haley

The well-intended subterfuge worked for about five years before the condition forced my hand, as it were. Those who saw me on a regular basis began to notice symptoms that were not so subtle anymore, and were kind enough to… Continue Reading →

All About Animals: Heroes in Our Midst

Posted on December 2, 2018 by Chic Miller

I first met them during the Shasta County Carr Fire. I watched as they made their way down our little winding road, through the thick smoke that had settled over the farm. Silently they came, seemingly out of nowhere. We… Continue Reading →

Mistress of the Mix: Shipwrecked! (Sorta.)

Posted on November 30, 2018 by Valerie Ing

And then there was that time we were shipwrecked in Alaska. This is a story I almost never tell, probably because it involves a little stupidity and poor planning, so even my own family will be surprised when they read… Continue Reading →

My Vice of Choice

Posted on November 28, 2018 by Dan Adams

My wife understands that nobody is perfect. That being said, she has informed me that my particular vice of choice has gone too far, and that she will have to intervene if I can’t get control of it myself. She… Continue Reading →

Enjoying the Holidays by Dropping Our “Assumptions”

Posted on November 25, 2018 by Terry Turner

You have probably heard what happens when we “assume”. Yes! We make an “ass” out of “u” and “me”. The problem is that our assumptions are a part of us. We’ve often had them since childhood, and sometimes we don’t… Continue Reading →

  • Comment on Three Rabid Bats Found in Shasta County This Year; Practice Safety to Avoid Rabies by Steve
Pictured is a fruit bat (one of the flying fox species). They don't occur in the Western Hemisphere except in zoos. Unlike our insect-eating bats, they rarely carry rabies.
  • Comment on Just in time for Halloween and the holidays, REU brings one of Redding’s oldest streets into 21st century by Joe Too
In reply to Beverly Stafford. Holiday might be a bit more expensive, but the one on hartnell and shasta view is a very clean store with no bums in the parking lot like rally's. And, they make great sandwiches.
  • Comment on California Community Colleges Earn Wellness Coaches Designation by Frank Treadway
Kudos to Dr. Frank Nigro and his team for putting the request together for this valuable program for our local population in need. One more reason Shasta College is the fine institution of higher education for local grads.
