As the North State digs out and turns the lights back out, prepare for more winter weather!

UPDATE 3:10 PM

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of Emergency Services continue to monitor events unfolding from the snowstorm that recently hit Shasta County. Local first responders, city and county staff throughout the operational area continue to work tirelessly to restore power, clear roads, conduct welfare checks, and monitor incoming weather patterns.

The American Red Cross and Good News Rescue are providing shelter for those in need. The American Red Cross will open a shelter at the Shasta District Fairgrounds, 1890 Briggs St.,Anderson, Ca., starting at 5 pm. The shelter will be set up in the old Satellite Wager Building. The Good News Rescue Mission is located at 3100 S. Market St., Redding. A warming center is open at the Redding Public Library today until 6:00 p.m. will be available on Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm., and Sunday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Crews will be concentrating their efforts along Eastside Road, South Bonneyview as well as the Western Oaks and Alta Mesa residential areas. Also crews will be restoring power along the Bechilli lane corridor including the South Bonneyview traffic signal.

A portion of the customers still out of power estimated at several hundred will be out of power until the homeowner and or business can successfully work with their electrical contractor to repair the customer owned equipment on their home or business and then call REU who will then come out and energize their service.

The Churn Creek/Enterprise High area has been restored. 1500 customers remain out of power. Additional information about remaining outages will be available soon. Again, thank you all for your patience over the last 2 days.

Note to our customers: Thank you so much for your patience over the last couple of days. We know it has been tough and being patient when your power is out is not easy. We have not taken it lightly either-it is unusual for long term outages in Redding. We understand your frustrations and apologize that it has taken longer than we would have liked to get all of our customers re-energized. We take our 99.9% reliability rating seriously, and want to get all homes restored as soon as possible. Please know that we know that there is a lot of work still remaining to recover from this large scale snow event. There are many homes still without power, and we will not give up on them.

Currently, just under 2,100 residents remain without power. Many customers in the South Shasta View and Girvan Rd areas have had power restored over the last few hours. Crews are working to get customers in the area of Branstetter and Country Heights to have power restored within the hour. Crews are refocusing on south Bechelli and Churn Creek areas, as well as all other areas listed before that remain without power at this time. Again, thank you for your patience, and thanks to the mutual aid help assisting our crews today.

Upon restoration of the concentration areas, crews will transition to smaller load pockets and single source outages. Crews are working through neighborhoods to identify outages and other problems in advance of line crews to speed up the repair process. Thank you for your patience as we restore service to all customers in our area.

Area of concentration to restore power include the following with approximate restore times Areas adjacent to Rancho Rd & south end of Shasta View (Saratoga, Western Ranches, Pacific Heights, Silver Creek, Carriage Glen, etc.) – to be restored by end of day today (approx. 3,000 customers) Areas of Girvan and Sacramento Drive – to be restored by end of day today (approx. 1,500 customers) Sunset Terrace Area – to be restored by end of day today (approx. 500 customers)

A strong storm continues to bring precipitation to the region through the weekend. Heavy snow will continue in the mountains with minor accumulations possible in the foothills through early Sunday. Additional rainfall expected in the Valley today with chances decreasing through the weekend.

Surface winds are generally from the southwest limiting strong wind gusts across the Valley overnight with the strongest gusts seen around 35 mph. Periods of gusts up to 35 mph will continue to be possible through early Saturday morning.

The main hazard through the weekend will be the snowfall impacting the Sierra-Southern Cascades and Shasta County mountains. Current radar shows heavy snow already falling in the Sierra with continued heavy snow forecast through the day into Saturday. Snow levels are expected to remain around 2500-3000 feet with an additional 3 to 6 feet expected through early Sunday morning, with local amounts even higher. Have extended the Winter Storm Warning for the Sierra through early Sunday morning due to the additional amounts up to 2 feet
expected Saturday in the Sierra. Additionally, areas around I-5 in Shasta County may see up to a foot of snow creating hazardous travel conditions mainly through Saturday morning, although additional light amounts may be seen through the day Saturday. A shortwave ahead of the main trough will move across NorCal Saturday night into Sunday bringing with it colder air and lower snow levels. Snow levels Sunday morning will drop to 800-1500 feet, although snowfall at this time will be decreasing and only light amounts up to 2-4 inches are expected at this time.

As for rainfall, additional amounts from a half to an inch to an inch can be expected in the Valley, with 1 to 4 inches in the foothills. There remains a slight chance for thunderstorms mainly late morning into the afternoon across the Valley today which may lead to localized areas of heavy rainfall. Urban and small stream
flooding is still a concern today as rain continues. Rain in the Valley will not be continuous through the weekend with periods of dry weather expected.

* Heavy rainfall combined with some snow melt over the lower mountain elevations has resulted in widespread urban and low-land flooding as well as rises and flooding of small streams.
Additional rainfall in the Central Valley will range from around one-half inch to an inch through Friday night. Foothill and mountain elevations are expected to receive another 1 to 4 inches of liquid precipitation with most of that occurring as snow as
snow levels lower to 2000 to 3000 feet through Friday. Lowering snow levels will reduce runoff in the drainage basins.

* Water will be slow to recede in low lying areas, thus the warning has been extended. Check road conditions before traveling as roads may be closed or will continue to experience standing water through Friday.
