It is with deep sadness that the City of Redding announces the unexpected passing of City Manager William Tarbox on Sunday, July 19, 2026.
Tarbox was appointed by the Redding City Council in late 2025 and began serving as City Manager in February 2026. During his time with the City, he was committed to serving the Redding community and working alongside City employees, elected officials, and community partners.
Out of respect for his family, the City will not be releasing additional details regarding his passing.
“Our hearts are with Will’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time,” said Mayor Mike Littau. “We are grateful for his service to the City of Redding and extend our deepest condolences to all who knew and cared for him.”
To ensure continuity of City operations, the Redding City Council will consider the appointment of an interim City Manager during its regular meeting on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.
As the City mourns this loss, the City Council will work to ensure a thoughtful and orderly leadership transition. Additional information will be shared with the public as it becomes available.
