To help improve conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists in Burney, the Pit River Tribe is inviting neighbors and businesses to share their ideas about creating a new Bicycle and Walkway Plan for Burney during a community workshop and walking tour on April 19--20.
These events and the new plan will ultimately help shape the community’s bicycle lanes and paths to provide safer routes to schools and better access to downtown, services and trails throughout Burney. You can help define future street and pathway improvements, and identify next steps and strategies for implementing high--priority projects.
“Community participation is vital, and all Burney residents are encouraged to attend,” said Charles White, tribal administrator for the Pit River Tribe. “This is an opportunity to have a direct role in creating a safe, healthy and more accessible Burney.”
The community workshop on Thursday, April 19, is an opportunity for residents to share their ideas about walking and biking in the area, and will feature free BBQ and live music. On Friday, April 20, participants can take a walking tour of local streets with the design team to assess walking and bicycling conditions, and discuss challenges and possible solutions.
These planning efforts are funded by a Caltrans Environmental Justice: Context--Sensitive Planning Grant awarded to the Pit River Tribe. A design team from the Local Government Commission and Fehr & Peers transportation consultants will conduct the workshop and develop the final bicycle and walkway plan.
“Following the April 19--20 events, the design team will prepare a plan with recommendations based on the public input from the workshop exercises,” said Tony Leonard, a project manager with the Local Government Commission. “The design team will return to Burney in a few months to hold another public workshop to present the initial plan to the Tribe and the Burney community for more input.“
Additional support for these bike--and--walkway events is provided by the Fall River Joint Unified School District, Burney Fire Protection District, Shasta County Public Health, Burney Chamber of Commerce, California Highway Patrol, Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, and other local organizations.
