Arcata House Fire Leads to the Discovery of Illegal Marijuana Grow

On July 27th, 2011, officers from the Arcata Police Department responded to the 1700 block of Iverson Avenue for the report of a structure fire. The officers were alerted by fire personnel that the origin of the fire appeared to be associated with a large marijuana grow inside the home.

Based on this information, the residence was secured and a search warrant was obtained.

Upon the service of the search warrant, officers discovered a sophisticated indoor marijuana cultivation operation inside the home and in a detached garage.

Nearly 800 growing marijuana plants, 80 pounds of dried marijuana in various stages of processing, 3 firearms and nearly $2,000 in cash were discovered and seized.

Sonja Marie Bush, 28, of Arcata and 34-year-old Darren Joseph Weeth of Arcata were arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on suspicion of cultivation of marijuana and cultivation of marijuana for sales.

City of Arcata building inspectors discovered numerous building code violations necessitating the immediate disconnection of electrical service.

If you suspect illegal drug activity in your neighborhood, please contact the Arcata Police Department at (707)-822-2428.
