Transient Allegedly Spit at Teen, Jumped on Car, Assaulted Dad

On Saturday, July 2, 2011, at 6:12 p.m., the Redding Police Department received several 911 calls from the K-Mart parking lot regarding a confrontation. Officers found two men struggling with each other on the ground, on Maraglia St., next to Parsons Junior High School.

The investigation determined that a family visiting Redding from Oregon was in front of the 99 Cent store, 2611 Hilltop Drive (next to K-Mart). Ashley Althof, 15 years of Medford, Oregon, was confronted by a transient, Christopher Jacob Anderson, 21 years, who also spit at her. Ashley’s mother, Carlyn Althof, 40 years of Medford, came to Ashley’s aid. The verbal confrontation became so heated that an uninvolved woman intervened. Dolores Stevens, 56 years of Anderson, drove her car between the two groups, in order to protect Ashley and Carlyn Althof. Anderson jumped onto the hood of Stevens’ car, causing minor damage.

Ashley Althof had phoned her father, Joseph Althof, 41 years of Medford, about the confrontation. Joseph Althof was nearby and immediately came to aid his daughter. He found Anderson walking from the shopping center onto Maraglia Street. Joseph Althof attempted to talk with Anderson. Anderson became irate and brought out two makeshift weapons. They were two 2” by 4” pieces of wood, about 2-3 feet long, with large nails protruding from the ends. Anderson attempted to strike Althof with the weapons. Althof knocked Anderson to the ground and fought with him until police officers arrived. Althof and Anderson each had minor abrasions and cuts.

Officers arrested Anderson and placed him in the rear seat of a patrol car. Anderson struggled with officers and attempted to get out of the patrol car, including by kicking the patrol car’s door. An officer used pepper spray to subdue him. Officers booked Anderson at the Shasta County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, and five warrants.

Anderson is well-known to law enforcement, with recent bookings on: 12/08/10, 1/28/11, 2/17/11, 5/01/2011, 5/04/2011, 5/21/2011, 6/05/2011, and 6/19/2011.
