GO Picks of the Week

I pretty much do all my shopping at the Redding Grocery Outlet Bargain Store these days, a realization that occured to me today, when I stopped by Safeway to pick up some basil, which GO didn’t have. My former favorite store now an over-priced corporate giant felt like a foreign place, so much so that I had to stop and ask for help finding the polenta.

The clerk who rang up my groceries commented that she hadn’t seen me in in a very long time. She said that come to think of it, there were many customers she hadn’t seen for a while. I told her I couldn’t speak for the others, but I was doing the lion’s share of my shopping at the Grocery Outlet, to which she replied, “Me, too.”

Pretty telling. Go, GO!

Speaking of GO, this week’s picks perfectly with the change of weather and fall’s arrival. I’m so excited I can hardly stand it.

The first thing that greeted me at GO this week was a huge box of beautiful pumpkins outside the store entrance — $3.99 for any size – priced elsewhere at $5.99.

Inside the doors I found a display of one of my favorite autumnal vegetables: squash. There were kabocha squash – $1.99 at GO, while they sell elsewhere for $2.99 each.

And I was thrilled to see large butternut squash, which I love for soups and ravioli fillings, sold at GO for $1.49 each, while they sell elsewhere for $1.99.  (I went home, halved them, cooked them, scooped them and froze the gorgeous orange flesh for when it’s needed.)

Oh, and I bought some acorn squash, which GO sells for $1.49 while they sell elsewhere for $1.99.

As an aside, GO Bargain Store has one of the most impressive aisles of Halloween stuff I’ve seen. I picked up a few things to send to son Joe in the Czech Republic. Halloween is Joe’s favorite holiday, and he lives in a place where people don’t acknowledge his special day.
