Friday was to be the day that Shasta County Superior Court was scheduled to handle Norm Ryan’s judgment, sentencing and a potential motion for a retrial. You may recall he was found guilty in June on all five charges related to taking money from Haven Humane Society, where he was once its CEO.
But there was no sentencing after all.
His attorney, Henry Salcido of Long Beach, argued that his team needed yet more time to fully represent Ryan. More time to gather more information, more time to interview more witnesses, more time to analyze computer hard drives, more time to even consult with a handwriting expert, among other things.
He argued that Ryan’s previous lawyers didn’t do as stellar as a job as they might have.
The Honorable Monica Marlow granted Ryan’s motion for a continuation and scheduled it for Sept. 29.
However, Marlow made it abundantly clear that there would be no more continuations or delays. No matter what. Salcido promised to comply.
A few dozen spectators filled Marlow’s courtroom for Ryan’s hearing, including a smattering of former Haven Humane employees and board members, and even Joe Gazzigli, Ryan’s most recent attorney.
To recap, In mid June Ryan’s sentencing was delayed so his new attorney could have a chance to familiarize himself with the case in the event Ryan decided to appeal.
More later. Stay tuned.
