Q: Congratulations on your upcoming move from North Market Street to the former Village Schoolhouse location.
We are very excited about our upcoming move to the former Village School Toys building at 1409 Market St.
Q: When do you hope to be moved in and open for business?
Our plan is to be open by May 1.
Q: What led you to that decision?
We have outgrown our current location, and this move will more then double our square footage.
Q: Can you tell a bit about your business, what you sell, and a bit about your typical customers?
Our main focus has been medical wear for both men and women, such as scrubs, lab coats, shoes. We also offer a large selection of equipment, such as, stethoscopes, scissors, blood pressure cuffs, etc. Our typical customers are in the medical field or restaurant business, but others find scrubs convenient in fields such as housekeeping. Some just like the convenience of all the pockets scrubs can offer. We also offer a small selection of culinary wear such as chef coats, aprons, hats, and yes, those checkered chef pants you asked about.
Q: Your career backgrounds are so different from what you do now. Was that an adjustment?
Mark, of course, is still in the medical field, teaching nursing at Lake College, and is loving it. His two passions are nursing and teaching. I, on the other hand, retired a little over two years ago after 20 years in law enforcement. Although, not as exciting, it’s nice to have our own business.<
Q: What changes are you making to your new space to accommodate your inventory?
We will only occupy about a third of the space that the toy store had, or about 2,000 square feet. The building will require a minimal amount of work to accommodate our business. A stockroom will be framed in along with new fitting rooms. The new space will allow us to keep more of each size in stock. It will also allow us to expand our lines to other professions that are currently not available in Redding.
Q: How do you envision your downtown business?
Market Street Uniforms is proud to support the downtown Redding area, and it’s so exciting to see the rebirth of the city center and to be a part of it.
Don Weaver and Mark Calkins own Market St. Uniforms – located (until they move into their new space) at 622 North Market St. in Redding. Market St. Uniforms is open Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m., Friday 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., and Satruday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They can be reached at 530.243.6781.
