Jan Morris of Redding and Norene Chase of Anderson own and operate Homemade Treats by Jan and Norene. Jan took some time between baking biscotti and making toffee to answe some questions regarding the women’s business in Millville, here in the North State.
Q: How did you get into the biscotti business?
I started baking biscotti quite a few years ago for family and friends. They said I should start selling it. (Sounded like a good idea since it was getting expensive to give it away!) My best friend of 38 years retired and we decided to start a business together.
Q: I know you sell your biscotti at the Redding Certified Farmers Market. Anywhere else?
We started selling to businesses and at farmer’s market. Then we opened our own small bakery.
Q: What flavors are most popular?
We have 8 different flavors of biscotti: Cranberry Orange, Amaretto, Cherry, Coffee, Creme de Menthe, Lemon and Chocolate. Our most popular is Cranberry Orange.
Q: What tips do you have for home bakers so their biscotti turns out as good as yours?
I had an old recipe for biscotti and changed it around some so ours is not as hard as biscotti normally is. We played with flavors until we ended up with these 8. I’m going to try a peppermint biscotti for Christmas and Norene is excited to make a caramel vanilla flavor. It just takes a lot of experimentation.
Q: Do you still eat your biscotti, or are you totally over it?
We still enjoy eating the biscotti. The trick is not eating too much!

Q: Anything else you’d like people to know?
Another great seller we have is toffee. It just melts in your mouth! We also sell scones, mini loaves of different types of breads, individual brownies, coffee cakes, apple streusel muffins, cookies and more. We sell pies and cakes by request. We really enjoy baking and are having a great time meeting so many nice people!
