World War II Added (and Subtracted) to the College Experience

Posted on July 13, 2018 by Guest Speaker

Mine was not the usual college experience—how could it have been with World War II swirling around us? I have tried to explain, to myself and others, just how encompassing and upsetting that time was. Everyone was on the move.… Continue Reading →

Posted on October 22, 2017 by Guest Speaker

It hangs in a place of honor right over my computer desk, and I admire it every time I pass it. It is a painting done in watercolor and ink, in lovely light browns, grays and black. It depicts three… Continue Reading →

Posted on February 18, 2017 by Guest Speaker

That’s exactly how I feel—trapped! I’m in the middle of the eighth volume of Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” series and I’m afraid there might be a ninth book. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed every page (and there were many of… Continue Reading →

Posted on February 24, 2016 by Guest Speaker

I am well acquainted with books. Sometimes I feel that I might drown in books. On my bedside table there is a stack—seven volumes high—waiting to be read. On the little table in the corner there is a motley collection,… Continue Reading →

The Bicycle

Posted on March 19, 2015 by Guest Speaker

I wanted a bicycle in the worst way. It wasn’t likely to happen, though, in a depression year in the mid ’30s. My brother had taught me how to ride. He had an old Army bike. I’m not sure of… Continue Reading →

In reply to Mahmoud Darwish. It’s a relief that Joanna is comfortably ahead….but, will her hands be tied if Measure B passes?

In reply to Steve Towers. I'll ignore most of your comment to focus on talking about UC Davis opening a medical school here. Even though it was all hearsay, I was exposed to this idea maybe 16-17 years ago. From what I understand, Davis answered "Thanks, but no thanks." That answer makes sense to me; […]

In reply to Flounders. Good to know about parsley. And I am impressed (jealous) about your tarragon returning after winter. You're correct about it doing best in partial shade. It's delicate. (I can't remember where I bought the Mexican tarragon, but it's STURDY and loves full sun.)
