English toffee tradition

Posted on December 12, 2007 by Doni Chamberlain

When I was younger, my holidays were spent baking and decorating hundreds of cookies and candies to give as gifts. Over the last few years I’ve whittled the list down to my favorites: roll-out butter cookies, molasses ginger snaps, Russian… Continue Reading →

Operator, information; get me high-speed on the line . . .

Posted on December 11, 2007 by Doni Chamberlain

I can see the photograph in my mind’s eye as clearly as when my friend Rex showed it to me a while back. Rex said he’d snapped that picture in Burney of a teenage girl, deep in concentration as she typed on a laptop.  She… Continue Reading →

Posted on December 7, 2007 by Doni Chamberlain

I never knew much about Igo before we built a house and moved here more than two years ago. I just knew it was way, way, way out west of Redding. Just the name – Igo – tells you it’s… Continue Reading →

Wednesday food day: Hanukkah Latkes

Posted on December 5, 2007 by Doni Chamberlain

Hanukkah began Tuesday at sundown. I know because Bruce told me. He knew, not just because he’s Jewish, but because a friend called and wished Bruce happy Hanukkah. Bruce doesn’t observe any of the Jewish holidays. But he’ll gladly eat… Continue Reading →

Tiny bugs everywhere

Posted on December 3, 2007 by Doni Chamberlain

They’re not fruit flies. If I had to guess, I’d say they were a gnat creature, perhaps a smaller, grayer cousin to the fruit fly.  And they do fly, in kind of a bumpy, jerky way, not purposefully, like a house fly. But boy… Continue Reading →

Saturday Holiday Shophop

Posted on November 30, 2007 by Doni Chamberlain

OK, so not to point out the obvious, but Redding’s downtown isn’t like Chico’s. Nor does it remotely resemble Fourth Street in Berkeley, where some really great shops are clumped together in one place. You park and walk from shop… Continue Reading →

My heart’s with you

Posted on November 29, 2007 by Doni Chamberlain

Candace Corbin, a Record Searchlight colleague, wrote this comment on my recent post after I reported that the RS is outsourcing some duties, such as art work and writing, to cut costs: “Doni,        I’ve been reading your web-site and I love it and I think… Continue Reading →

Shasta County has more 4-H youths than all of California’s other counties combined. Shasta County appears to be #1 in junior livestock sales with ~$2million/year compared to ~$1.5million for Kern... But Kern County has over 1,000 4H-ers, Fresno County has ~750, and Shasta is third with ~675. Statewide there are ~4,100, so ~1/6 California 4H-ers […]
