I felt pretty perky when this photo was taken at precinct 770 inside the Redding Fire Station No. 3.
Tuesday was my first day as a precinct clerk. I joined fellow clerk, Kelly Brewer, and our experienced precinct inspector, Lori Tessier.
Thank God Kelly and Lori had done this before. I had an hour or so of training, and that’s it. I got there at 6 a.m., as requested. We had a lot to do before we could open our polling place. And everything had to be done in pairs, and by the book.
I had some goals between the 7 a.m. opening and 8 p.m. polling place closing.
Do not give someone the wrong ballot.
Do not break anything.Â
Do not throw the election.
Do nothing that would require an incident report being filed.
I met all my goals.
About 11 hours into my my stint I’m sure I didn’t look as perky as I did that morning. In fact. I began to feel exactly as if I’d had a couple glasses of wine. “It’s the fatigue,: Kelly and Lori said.
I will tell you I had a fascinating day. I highly recommend being a precinct worker. It’s really fun. And the firemen were great guys.Â
If you can get up really early and work all day in a polling place and then stay up late, then precinct work is for you.
I’d tell you more but I’ve been up for 19 hours, and I think I’ll call it a day. I’ll have to wait until morning to hear the election news.   Â
Volunteer to be a precinct worker by calling the Shasta County Elections Department at 225-5730 and tell them Doni sent you.
