The following is information regarding Coroner’s cases related to the Zogg Fire, which is still active in Shasta County. To date the Shasta County Coroner’s Office has been advised of four deaths related to this incident. All four deaths have previously been reported to the public through prior press releases from both the Coroner’s Office and the Cal-Fire Incident Management Team, who are tasked with the overall management of the Zogg Fire.
The Coroner’s Office treats the identification of decedents very seriously to include treating the families of the victims with empathy and respect. The identification process is guided by law and can take time to gather factual information from the scene coupled with scientific evidence obtained through the postmortem process. In every case the factual evidence is analyzed before a “positive identification” is determined.
Today the Coroner’s Office was able to positively identify Victim #1, Karin King. Additionally, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was able to positively identify Victim #4, Kenneth Vossen.
Victim #1 On September 28, 2020 at approximately 0700 hours, Deputy Coroner Investigators were dispatched to the first reported victim of the Zogg Fire. The decedent was located on Zogg Mine Road in Igo, California. The decedent has been positively identified as 79-year-old Karin King of Igo, California. The decedent’s next-of-kin has been notified and a postmortem examination has been completed. This case remains under investigation by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office.
Victim #2 Victim #2 is a decedent located within the Zogg Fire boundary. Victim #2 has yet to be positively identified. Once identification is confirmed a news release will follow.
Victim #3 Victim #3 is a decedent located within the Zogg Fire boundary. Victim #3 has yet to be positively identified. Once identification is confirmed a news release will follow.
Victim #4 On September 30, 2020, the Shasta County Coroner’s Office was notified of a fourth victim of the Zogg Fire. The subject was previously transported to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California where he later succumbed to his injuries on September 29, 2020. The decedent has been positively identified as 52-year-old Kenneth Vossen of Igo, California. This case remains under investigation by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
