A happy crowd gathered at the south end of the Sundial Bridge this morning for the McConnell Foundation’s dedication of Domke Plaza, a seating area built to honor and celebrate Don and Doreeta Domke‘s lifetime of community service and contribution, most notably their dedication to and passion for Turtle Bay Museum.
Domke Plaza was commissioned and funded by the McConnell Foundation to honor the Domkes’ support of Turtle Bay. Domke Plaza was designed by Trilogy Architecture and created by Ron Black of Second Time Tables.
The focal point and centerpiece of the curved concrete-and-glass bench area is the newly repaired and relocated sculpture presented in 2004 by world-renowned architect and designer of the Sundial Bridge, Santiago Calatrava, to honor Carl and Leah McConnell.
For 10 years, the sculpture was located under the north end of the bridge, but was eventually removed for safe-keeping and repair after it was vandalized.
At the Domke Plaza dedication, McConnell Foundation CEO Lee Salter spoke of the Domke’s dedication to not just Turtle Bay, but the entire community.
Doreeta Domke said a few words following Salter, and spoke with emotion about Leah and Carl McConnell’s legacy, and the importance of the relationships built during her decades of community service.
A light champagne brunch followed the ceremony outdoors at the Turtle Bay Museum Cafe.
