Tuesday Funny: Fire! Fire! Beavis to the Rescue!

At tonight’s Redding City Council meeting, Councilman Patrick Jones is expected to suggest that volunteers should staff the city’s recently closed Station 2 — former home of trained, paid firefighters.

As someone who was a full-time paid professional Firefighter for nine years and regularly worked with professional, dedicated, volunteer Firefighters/Medics, I find your cartoon to be in poor taste. Do you realize that there are REAL medics that are competent and professional while being volunteers? You need to spend some time with Shasta County Fire.

As a former firefighter I would think you'd be concerned that some of your colleagues will lose their jobs to "volunteers". I would never diminish the contributions of skilled volunteers, bless them. But, this plan of PJ's is meant to unnecessarily cost people their jobs and will result in not only public safety issues but in serious liability concerns for the city that have the potential to be far more costly in both money AND lives.

      Besides, it's just a cartoon.

      Love & Smoochies,

My comments specifically avoided the politics and economics of the situation.

Your cartoon implies that volunteer firefighter/medics are not Real Medics.

That is an inappropriate remark to make in a portion of California where many areas are served by professionally skilled firefighters and medics.

Bahahar…Well again you nailed a funny one on the Jones boy, Phil. Jonesey could enlist his tea heads to fight fires and encourage them to bring their garden hoses and rakes with 'em.

Tea partiers are the last to respond to fires —they just start 'em.

As a former First Responder/EMT and Search & Rescue volunteer, I have to say that Phil, you are solidly straight-on with your toon, man! NO offense taken in the least!!

I think Steve infers incorrectly, and there is a distinct difference from what Phil implies and what Steve infers. I found no disrespect whatsoever… loosen up a bit.

Being proud and thankful for Steve's 9-year stint performing some of the most difficult work one could imagine, I think your satirical take really focuses on a potentially dangerous possibility toward more mediocrity for our good city workers. Let's not tighten the nuts too tightly – we might break a wing. Great cartoon, Phil, Great!

Admit it Phil. The day that character, put on that funny costume, you were in heaven!

What a gift he has been to you! Keep us laughing in Redding.
