GO Pick: November Pumpkin

go-pumpkin1

Sometimes we need to hunt for best finds at the Redding Grocery Outlet Bargain Market. For me, that’s part of the fun.

Take, for example, the super-duper gargantuan No. 10 cans of Wis-Con Solid Pack Pumpkin for $4.99 – ($9.99 elsewhere).

What’s strange about this Wis-Con pumpkin is its curious label. I nearly walked right by it because at first glance I thought it was mixed canned vegetables, a product that wouldn’t turn my head in a million years. Canned mixed vegetables? Ugh. Look closely. Does it look like a can of pumpkin? Nooooo.

Rather, the label shows everything but pumpkin: peas, corn, string beans, potatoes.

But ignore the picture for a moment. As surely as Thanksgiving falls on a Thursday this Wis-Con 6-lb. can holds solid pack pumpkin. I opened a can and guess what? It looks like Libby’s. Solid pack pumpkin is pretty hard to mess up.

This Wis-Con pumpkin was probably intended for restaurants. Most cooks wouldn’t know what to do with a No. 10 can of the golden squash-family goodness.

But anewscafe.com readers are not your ordinary home cooks. A great many of us are foodies, unintimidated by so much pumpkin. In fact, we welcome the opportunity to take such a bargain and run with it.

We know that bargains like this were born to share with pumpkin-loving cooks foodie friends or divide into smaller containers and freeze or use for a multitude of holiday recipes: pumpkin pies or pumpkin cheesecake or pumpkin bread or pumpkin waffles and pumpkin soup (yes, because there’s such a thin line between pumpkin soup and butternut squash soup).

I have no idea how many cases of this Wis-Con canned pumpkin Redding’s GO Bargain Market has on hand, but don’t worry, I left some for you.

p.s. While shopping at the Redding GO yesterday I also bought some absolutely delicious honey pistachio cheese ($1.79) and a Rosenborg bleu cheese/pear cheese ($1.99 and a Havarti with basil cheese ($1.79) as centerpiece for a cheese platter served with some of the best Fuji apples I’ve had all season ($2.99 for 5 lbs.), sliced, and some Milton’s Water Crackers (50 cents).

As an aside, I’m sure you’re aware – but don’t forget that ALL the Redding GO’s wine is 20 percent off now but the sale goes only through Nov. 15.

I bought a case of wine yesterday and will go back for more today. Remember to take advantage of the Redding GO’s $5-off $35 coupon found here on anewscafe.com.
