A Gift for Foodies: The Cascade is Cooking up Something Good

bignight2

Countdown: Two shopping days until Christmas.

Don’t panic. I have a gift idea.

The Cascade Theatre has partnered with sponsors Jefferson Public Radio, Carmona’s Appliance Center, Pages Copy Center and Food for Thought: A News Cafe to create a first-ever series, a film-and-food event in January called Dinner and a Movie.

The series begins 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, and will continue for the next three Wednesday nights in January.

Each evening presents an entirely different film with an entirely different culinary focus, followed by an on-stage cooking demonstration by yours truly and a guest chef that matches the movie’s theme, topped off with samples (of course).

Foodies will love it.

Eaters will love it.

Film-lovers will love it.

Those who look for any excuse to visit the Cascade will love it.

What’s not to love? The Dinner and a Movie series lasts four weeks, which will nicely stretch out your gift for an entire month.

OK, so technically it’s not actually a dinner and a movie. But the movie will entertain you, and the cooking demonstrations will teach you, and the guest chefs and I will feed you.

Admission is a bargain price of $10 for each combo film and food demo. For an even better value, you can purchase the entire four-week series pass for $30. Such a deal.

Carmona’s Appliance will provide an on-stage kitchen.

The Cascade Theatre will provide the films.

I’ll be there with four talented chefs who’ll help me prepare something delicious.

Maybe we’ll see you in the audience.

Jan. 7 – ‘The Big Night’

Starring Stanley Tucci, this is one of my all-time favorite movies. It’s one of the rare films I’ve watched more than once, on purpose. (Rated R for language.)

Guest Chef: Duane Wood – The theme: Italian

Jan. 14 – ‘No Reservations’

Catherine Zeta-Jones stars as a New York chef suddenly charged with caring for her 10-year-old niece. (Rated PG)

Guest chef: Children (TBA) – The theme: Kid-friendly cooking

Jan. 21 – ‘Babette’s Feast’

Babette is a 19th-century French refugee who repays a family’s kindness with the meal of a lifetime. (Rated G with subtitles)

Guest chef: Nancy Matthews – The theme: Chocolate

Jan. 28 – ‘Waitress’

Jenna is a small-town waitress with the gift of pie-making who relies upon her pie-baking skill to get her derailed life on track. (Rated PG-13)

Guest chef: Andrea Charroin – The theme: Pies (and demystifying crust-making)
