Here’s how it used to work, long ago and far away:
Want to go to a movie?
Sure. What do you want to see?
I don’t know. What’s good? What time do you want to go?
I don’t know. Let’s check the newspaper. Where is the newspaper?
We don’t subscribe, remember?
Oh yeah.
The newspaper wasn’t much help anyway. It just showed times and titles.
Here at Food for Thought you don’t need a newspaper to check the movies. Look up at the top tabs and you’ll see a calendar page so you can see what’s happening around the north state. (The top nav bar also includes a movie tab that takes you to the movies section. Not to confuse things, but you can also get to the movies section via the calendar page.)
Entertainment ‘r’ us.
What I love about this new movie section (pause here for applause, applause, applause for Jim Gore, who put this together) is we can actually watch movie trailers.
Three things: First, if you have dial-up, I’m afraid your computers can’t handle the video trailers. I’m really sorry about that, and as someone who only achieved high-speed Internet recently, I do feel your pain. Truly.
Second. we have no control over the advertisements that appear before the trailers. They’re annoying, but dem’s the berries. Close your eyes or go get a drink of water during them if you want.
Third, when did we quit calling them previews?
Back to the trailers. Had I actually watched a trailer for 88 Minutes, with Al Pacino, instead of assuming anything with Pacino would be worth watching, maybe I could have had the good sense to steer clear of possibly THE worst movie I’ve ever seen. Well, the exception might be that Japanese movie, the Red Eel, but it’s a toss-up. Take this as a gift: Do not see 88 Minutes. Even on DVD. It’s a total dog, from beginning to end.
Woof.
On the other hand, a trailer for Iron Man, with Robert Downey Jr., looked intriguing enough to convince me to see it. I really, really liked that movie. I could even watch it again.
Yes, this Food for Thought movie section is just one more service especially designed for you. I like it, too.
Check it out. Go to the movies. Then do us a favor and tell us which movies you liked, and most of all, which movies you hated.
I’ll do the same for you.
In fact, here’s one: The Station Agent. It’s a great film available on DVD. I am probably the last person alive to see this movie, but I absolutely adored it. So funny, so touching, so surprising. See if you’ll like it, too.
