Local paper suffers from poor circulation

Oh my, the interesting things one finds on Food for Thought forums, information you just won’t see in the local paper. For example, see what our own brainiac techno wizard Jim G. posted after he did some math-based research and analyzed the numbers reported in E.W. Scripps’ annual report. Here’s Jim’s take on where the Record Searchlight stands – or should I say, slumps.

The E.W. Scripps corporation filed their annual report with the SEC a few days back, and our local paper ranked 17th of 17 in daily circulation trends. While daily newspaper circulation for their wholly-owned papers was down about 1.5 percent, the Searchlight dropped about 6 percent.

Results were for the six months ending last September, so the message may be even more grim for the local paper. Maybe cutting back on local coverage isn’t such a good idea.
