Can’t sleep

Here’s the thing about writing a blog: it’s real time. For example, here it is 4 a.m. and the grinding wheels in my brain made such a racket that they eventually woke me up and got me out of bed.

So here I sit in front of my computer, trying to type quietly so I don’t wake Bruce. (If you’ve been in our house you know it’s a very open floor plan; like you can see our bed from the dining room. And my desk sits between the dining room and our bedroom.)

But this blog is so cool, because I can write when I want. It feels like a cross between e-mail and column-writing. (Speaking of column-writing, one wise friend suggested that I don’t have to write such long blogs, or I’ll burn myself out. Good point. I realized all the entries I’d written so far were all around 700 words, which about the length of my former columns. Old habits.)

Because this blogging stuff is so new to me, I’m still unsure about protocol. For example, if Thom G put a link to my blog on his blog, does that mean it’s good manners for me to invite him to post his link on my blog? Are there other things about blogging I should know? Is there some blogger lingo I should use? If I blog a column, am I a blogger or a columnist or both?

Quick, I need a Miss Manners Blog Answer Book.

In the meantime, I think I’ll get a little sleep. I’ll check back later.
