Or So it Seems … The Kindness of Strangers

Posted on June 26, 2014 by Robb Lightfoot

When I was a kid, mother warned me about strangers. “It’s OK to talk to them so long as I’m around,” she’d say. “But keep your eyes open.” She wasn’t unfriendly, just wary. She erred on the side of caution,… Continue Reading →

Or So it Seems … The Play’s the Thing

Posted on June 19, 2014 by Robb Lightfoot

“I’ll have grounds More relative than this—the play’s the thing Wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the King.” Hamlet Saturday I sat outdoors in the dark with hundreds of strangers and watched a 12-year-old boy get his fondest wish.… Continue Reading →

Or So it Seems … Making the Grade

Posted on May 22, 2014 by Robb Lightfoot

Twice a year, I do something I loathe more than serving jury duty or sitting in the dentist’s chair. I prepare my students’ grades. Evaluations are essential for helping students improve. No problem there, but grades are more—and less—than that.… Continue Reading →

Or So it Seems … A Gluten for Punishment

Posted on May 1, 2014 by Robb Lightfoot

I’d rather eat a sesame-seed bagel than Ben and Jerrys. Or a steak. I’m a starch-a-holic. For nearly a decade, when I was running marathons, I ate nothing but bread—French bread, buttermilk bread, oatmeal, multi-grain, sprouted. You name it, and… Continue Reading →

  • Comment on Letter to the Editor by Supervisor Allen Long: Don’t divert $10 million in jail funds to risky medical-school partnership by Judy Hanawalt
In reply to Steve Towers. I'll ignore most of your comment to focus on talking about UC Davis opening a medical school here. Even though it was all hearsay, I was exposed to this idea maybe 16-17 years ago. From what I understand, Davis answered "Thanks, but no thanks." That answer makes sense to me; […]

In reply to Flounders. Good to know about parsley. And I am impressed (jealous) about your tarragon returning after winter. You're correct about it doing best in partial shade. It's delicate. (I can't remember where I bought the Mexican tarragon, but it's STURDY and loves full sun.)
  • Comment on 7th Annual Lavender Harvest: Giving back to the community, sharing a love of flowers, farming, family and fun by Doni Chamberlain
In reply to Shelly Shively. Glad you liked the story. And you're right that Gary and Rocio are inspirational. I am looking forward to visiting the Lavender Harvest, and can't wait to plant some lavender at my place.
