The Scoop on Poop: Housetraining Your Dog

Posted on March 26, 2010 by Carla Jackson

While many pet owners now seek dog-friendly methods to teach basic obedience skills, some of us are still mired in the Dark Ages when it comes to housetraining. During a recent presentation about dog care, I was stunned when the… Continue Reading →

Play Your Way to a Well-Trained Dog: Fetch!

Posted on February 2, 2010 by Carla Jackson

If there were a People’s Choice Award for games to play with dogs, “Fetch” would win in a landslide.  Even non-dog people seem unable to resist tossing a ball when propositioned by a retrieving fiend. The shared joy of play,… Continue Reading →

Service Dog Fraud – Quest for the Vest

Posted on November 24, 2009 by Carla Jackson

A word about service dogs: you probably don’t have one. Want to drive me crazy?  Just ask, “Where can I get one of those vests so I can take my dog everywhere?”  This question is almost always asked by someone… Continue Reading →

Play Your Way to a Well-Trained Dog: Hide & Seek

Posted on October 19, 2009 by Carla Jackson

I could live in relative bliss with a dog that knew nothing but how to come when called. I mean the screech-to-a-halt, turn-on-a-dime, zoom-back-to-me-enthusiastically -no-matter-what’s-going-on kind of recall.  A reliable recall is the Holy Grail of dog ownership. OSHA Approved… Continue Reading →

Torpedoes of Death Masquerade as Innocent Grass to Torture Dogs

Posted on July 8, 2009 by Carla Jackson

I see foxtails. Everywhere. Hordeum murinum or “Hare Barley,” a non-native invader from Spain, grows in healthy, thick patches along the trails and in open spaces where people walk their dogs. What appears to be innocent, lush grass in early… Continue Reading →

The Games People Play … With Dogs

Posted on November 26, 2008 by Carla Jackson

By Carla Jackson Any relationship would be taxed if one of the parties involved insisted on winning all the time. Golf, tennis, racquetball – what if your friend just HAD to win every game, refused to relinquish the ball and… Continue Reading →

What a wonderful article about a woman I admire so much. A musician, a baker, a mother, grandmother and a healer. I will never forget getting to attend a birthday party for Miss Piggy Sue. I first met Piggy when she was a wee one and watched her blossom and blossom and blossom! Thank you […]

Shasta County has more 4-H youths than all of California’s other counties combined. Shasta County appears to be #1 in junior livestock sales with ~$2million/year compared to ~$1.5million for Kern... But Kern County has over 1,000 4H-ers, Fresno County has ~750, and Shasta is third with ~675. Statewide there are ~4,100, so ~1/6 California 4H-ers […]
