It’s like this every September. We think, oh, if only we can get through the summer and get the kids back in school, things will slow down. But then September arrives, and it’s simply jam-packed with activities. We put away the Labor Day picnic items, and next thing you know it’s Thanksgiving.
Check the calendar here at ANewsCafe.com, and synch your calendar with the rest of those in the household. I guarantee: Your September is busier than you think.
A few events you should ink onto your calendar:
At 6 p.m. Tuesday, HawkMan Studios hosts a reception for artist Raina Pratt at Vintage Wine Bar & Restaurant. Music by Stephanie Foos and an optional fundraising wine-tasting. Pratt’s paintings will be on display at Vintage through Oct. 3.
This Saturday is Second Saturday ArtHop, and you can get all the info about Redding’s favorite art event here. The ArtHop kickoff will be at the newly renamed Market Street Promenade downtown, and will feature a performance by the Enterprise High School Jazz Ensemble. The fun starts at 5 p.m., and wraps up with an 9:30 p.m. outdoor showing of “Auntie Mame” as part of Enjoy magazine’s free movie program.
Saturday also is the beginning of the Palo Cedro Honey Bee Festival, which runs all weekend at Bishop Quinn High School. For info, click here.
If you’d like a nice rest before launching into all those activities, you can always stop by the Redding Library at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and hear my free speech to Writers Forum, “What I Learned from Writing a Screenplay.”
On Sunday, we have one of Redding’s favorite annual events, the Asphalt Cowboys Community BBQ in Lake Redding Park. A full barbecue meal — chicken or tri-tip — for $6. You can eat it at a picnic table there at the park, where there’ll be live music by Summer Schappell, an auction and other activities, or you can drive through and pick your food up to go. Details here.
And that’s just this coming weekend. We’ve also got the Downtown Redding Beer and Wine Festival and Blues by the River, both on Sept. 19, and the Turtle Bay Art and Craft Fair on Sept. 26.
- Shasta County Supervisor Les Baugh has announced that he’ll seek a second term, and he’s scheduled a fundraising barbecue for Oct. 16 at Anderson River Park. For details, call 223-1700.
- Anna Graham: My son was playing around online with one of those anagram sites (there are a million of them; Google “anagram finder”), and found that the letters in “Steve Brewer” could be rearranged to read “Sweeter Verb,” which is a pretty great anagram for a writer. Kelly wasn’t so lucky. Her anagram was “Wry Elk Rebel.”
- Movies We’ve Seen: Kel’s out of town this weekend, so I went to see “District 9” by myself. Pretty good science fiction film about aliens stranded here on Earth. Maybe it was the documentary style, but I never went “wow.”
