Shasta College To Offer Gardening Workshops

Shasta College, collaborating with the University of California Master Gardner program, the Redding Public Library, and the Shasta Seed Library, will host three upcoming gardening workshops and a garden fair this spring.

The first workshop, Gardening Basics, will be held on February 22, from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Shasta College Farm in Room 4000. Workshop topics will include:

  • Grafting tomatoes and trees
  • Seed starting basics
  • Seed selection and when to start seeds for your growing zone
  • Growing Dahlias
  • Repotting and rejuvenation of house plants
  • And more…

There will be on-site soil analysis for those who bring a soil sample.

The second workshop will focus on Container and Sustainable Gardening and will be held on March 8, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on the Shasta College Farm in the 4000 building classroom. Workshop topics will include:

  • Gardening in containers
  • Planting Blueberries
  • House plants 101
  • Growing succulents
  • Composting with worms
  • Attracting Pollinators
  • Vertical gardens

There will be on-site soil analysis for those who bring a soil sample.

The third workshop, Getting the Outside Garden Ready and Preserving what You Grow, will be a combined workshop with the UC Master Food Preservers. This workshop will be held April 26, from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. at the Shasta College Farm in the greenhouse. Workshop topics will include:

  • Permaculture Principles
  • Bed Preparation for an Amazing Harvest.
  • Hardening off and Transplanting.
  • How to Start Composting and Composting Demonstration
  • Setting Up Irrigation for A Successful Growing Season
  • Growing your own herbs
  • Controlling weeds and bugs
  • Preserving the harvest
  • Canning basics

These workshops will have three sessions of classes that last about 40 minutes each, and participants will be able to select topics for each session. There will be a $5.00 charge to cover materials and seeds at each workshop.

Master Gardeners are also sponsoring a Plant Swap after the last workshop for those who would like to participate. Participants swap seeds or plant starts for plants or seeds that they need. For those who do not have seeds or plants to swap, Master Gardeners will also have some seeds to share with participants. Bring healthy cuttings and plant starts in a plastic bag or place them in water to participate in a plant swap.

Garden Fair is planned for before the last workshop on April 26 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The garden fair will take place at the Shasta College farm in the 4000 building and the parking lot. If you would like to be a vendor at this free garden-related event, contact us before April 1, 2025.

This family-friendly event will include garden activities for children, composting demonstrations, garden-related vendors and basic gardening advice.
