Fire Updates for Tuesday, September 11, 8:47 AM

The latest updates on fire activity impacting the Redding/surrounding areas.

From the Facebook page for the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office:

The Red Cross Shelters located in Redding will be placed on standby due to lack of population. Signs will be posted with contact information should anyone need assistance.

From the Facebook page for US Forest Service – Shasta-Trinity National Forest:

The Kerlin Fire is 1,748 acres and is 60% contained. There are 795 resources working on the fire, including four helicopters and fixed wing aircraft as needed and available.

Last night was another quiet night, and firefighters on the line continued to patrol the fire perimeter and to mop up the northern edge of the fire. Last night was the last full night shift, although crews will remain assigned to patrol the fire perimeter for the next few nights.

Priorities today will be to continue mop up, strengthen established containment lines and to backhaul any excess hose and equipment that remains on the fireline.

Weather will continue with a cooling trend through Thursday, with north to northwest winds picking up in the afternoon.

As of 4:30 p.m. on September 9, 2018, all MANDATORY evacuations on the Kerlin Fire have been changed to ADVISORY. That includes structures west of the South Fork of the Trinity River from the Lower South Fork Road/ Pelletreau Road intersection north to Salmon Rock, due west to the Humboldt-Trinity County Line, south to the 3N32 B Spur (at the south end of Section 30), due east to the Pelletreau Road, along the north side of the Pelletreau Road back to the intersection with Lower South Fork Road.

Hirz Fire

Total Personnel 248
Size 46,150 Acres
Percent of Perimeter Contained 97%

Projected Incident Activity
12 hours: Fire activity will be minimal due to the inversion onset in the evening and decrease in temperatures with corresponding increase in relative humidity. Any fire spread is unlikely.

24 hours: Fire activity will remain minimal. The fire growth will be limited with little threat to the perimeter. Isolated interior unburned islands may exhibit an increase in fire behavior with increased winds and decreased humidity. Any fire spread is unlikely.

Delta Fire

Total Personnel 2,433
Size 53,311 Acres
Percent of Perimeter Contained 5%
Estimated Containment Date Saturday September 22nd, 2018 approx. 12:00 AM

Projected Incident Activity
12 hours: Increased fuel moisture will reduce spread and spotting, but continuous fine fuels will carry fire through the night time hours.

24 hours: Increased fire behavior from forecast increased winds. Fire will continue to move along ridges to the north and back off higher terrain into drainage throughout the day. Areas in clean air will experience much greater spread as fire backs and flanks.

Weather Concerns
Observed: Smoke from the Delta Fire overspread the Hirz Fire and persisted over the area through the night. Fair to poor humidity recoveries were observed along the ridges with relative humidities in the 41-46 percent range, with 52-57 percent relative humidities in the lower drainages. Low temperatures were generally in the 50s. North-northeast ridgetop winds gusted to 15 mph with downslope and downvalley winds noted elsewhere.

Forecasted: A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 1300 Tuesday through 0800 Wednesday for strong and gusty winds and low relative humidity values. North- northeast ridge top winds in the morning Tuesday will become south-southwest at 7 to 12 mph by late morning and then southwest-west at 10 to 15 mph with gusts around 25 mph by early afternoon. Highs will be 72-77 along the ridges and 85-90 in the lower drainages. Relative humidities will be in the 12-22 percent range. Winds will then become west-northwest at 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 25 mph early in the evening Tuesday, shifting to the north-northeast at 7 to 12 mph with gusts around 20 mph late in the evening on Tuesday, continuing into early Wednesday morning.
