I went to Melody Guy’s show at Armando’s Gallery House last night, and it was something of a revelation. Her songwriting talent had already earned my respect, but to see her live, with only her guitar, drove home that she is an awesome performer as well. I saw Townes Van Zandt solo in the early eighties, and a few years later, I discovered Nanci Griffith solo when she opened for John Prine. In both cases, I came away feeling lucky that I’d had the chance to see them without a band, allowing the raw, evocative power of their songwriting to shine through. I feel the same way about Melody Guy: I sure wouldn’t pass up the chance to see her live with a band, but give me a choice, and I’ll choose Ms. Guy and her guitar any day. Last night, I overheard a young woman mention that Melody reminded her of a certain well-known singer. If the world is a just place, we’ll one day be hearing, “She reminds me of Melody Guy.”
