SECOND UPDATE: Happy Valley School Evacuated Due to Bomb Squad Activity

SECOND UPDATE

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) has lifted the Happy Valley area evacuation order and road closures. Residents are allowed to return to their homes at this time.

24 hour security is in place at the site as a significant amount of explosives remain on the property (5747 Happy Valley Road, Happy Valley, CA). Due to the significant age of the explosives, and that they are considerably more volatile when moved, the determination has been made to keep in them in place as plans are developed for safe removal/destruction. These plans may include a notice to residents for future evacuations and road closures.

Throughout the day, the SCSO Bomb Squad continued to locate more explosives, creating a delay for residents to return.

**UPDATE**
**NEWS RELEASE**
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office originally planned to lift evacuation orders and road closures soon. Additional explosives will be detonated within the next few hours delaying the opening the evacuation area. SCSO anticipates opening the area later this evening. Updates will be posted as received.
While some explosives have been destroyed/detonated, a significant amount remains at the property. Plans are underway for destruction of the remaining explosives. Due to the age of the explosives and the volatile nature during removal and transportation, measures such as evacuation are deployed in the interest of public safety. Additional evacuations can be reinstated when plans are in place for removal of the remaining explosives at a future date.
Happy Valley School is expected to resume tomorrow, February 28, 2018.
