South City Park

On 07/05/2017 at about 10:07 a.m., officers with the Redding Police Department were dispatched to 1250 Parkview Avenue (South City Park) for a reported stabbing. The suspect, who had stabbed Kyle York, 36 years of age of Redding, was being detained by other people in the park. York was suffering from a serious stab wound to his upper left leg that was bleeding profusely. He is in stable condition at a local area hospital.

Redding patrol and bicycle officers quickly arrived and the suspect, Scott Smith 51 years of Susanville, CA, was detained. The knife Smith used was located at the scene. Witnesses were quickly identified and interviewed. York was also interviewed and provided a brief statement that he was stabbed without any warning. Smith provided a statement and claimed he was acting in self-defense after he had been attacked last week by York and attacked again today. Smith had a minor injury to his left ear as a result of today’s fight with York.

This investigation is on-going as witness statements were very conflicting. Smith has been booked for assault with a deadly weapon into the Shasta County Jail pending review by the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office.
