Redding Electric Utility (REU), Redding’s locally-owned municipal utility is urging customers who qualify to sign up for additional assistance with their electric utility payment. In January, the Redding City Council voted unanimously to increase access to REU’s Lifeline Plus+ discount program. Prior to Council action, customers whose maximum household income did not exceed 30 percent of median income (in Shasta County) would receive a discount. The new program is now expanded to include all customers whose maximum household income does not exceed 50 percent of median income levels in Shasta County. “You don’t have to be a senior citizen or disabled to qualify for the Lifeline Plus+ discount as you do with the Lifeline Program.” according to Patrick Keener, Communications and Marketing Manager for REU.

The Lifeline Plus+ energy discount is available to all income-qualified customers regardless of age or disability. This program provides for a 25 percent discount on both the monthly network access charge and the first 300 kilowatt hours (kWh) on usage each month. REU has calculated this 300 kWh as the average usage for basic needs, such as lighting, refrigerator, microwave, and washer and dryer.

For example, if you are a family of four whose yearly income is $29,500 or less you would be eligible for this program. A family of six with an income of $34,250 or less would qualify. REU asks if you think you might qualify please call the Redding Housing Division Lifeline Hotline at (530) 225-4578 or REU Customer Service at (530) 339-7200 for more information or for other energy savings programs and/or services.
