Prather Ranch owner and longtime mental health advocate Mary Rickert is officially announcing her candidacy for the office of District 3 Supervisor in Shasta County. Mary joins incumbent Pam Giacomini and challenger Janet Chandler in a three-way race that will have its first contest on June 7th this year.

Among the main issues facing Shasta County, Mary noted that a district wide survey she commissioned as well as conversations with area leaders and citizens led her to conclude that public safety and homelessness are the most challenging issues that face District 3. District 3 extends from the eastern center of Redding to the Shasta County border near Fall River Mills/McArthur.

“This is a critical time for Shasta County as we transition out of the cuts that had to be made during the Great Recession. Now is the time to bring new energy to the Board of Supervisors to ensure that our public safety, mental health and homelessness issues are met with an effective response,” Rickert said.

Mark Montgomery, Vice President of Operations for the Ortner Management Group, and former director of the Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Board of Shasta County is Rickert’s campaign co-chair. Mark said he got involved with Mary’s campaign because “over the last ten years, Mary has exhibited a strong work ethic and collaborative ability to bring people together to accomplish real change. Shasta County is already better off because of Mary’s achievements and I hope to see her continue her efforts on the Board of Supervisors.”

Along with today’s announcement, Mary’s campaign team is currently planning a special kickoff event, which will feature a community cleanup of the Clover Creek Preserve on March 17th.

Judging from the Shasta County Sheriff’s activity logs, it’s pretty darn clear homelessness and mental illness are major issues in the rural areas.

Perfect candidate to represent the people of Shasta County!

She has been in contact over the years with a large number of people, State/Fed/Local agencies, and many different types of businesses.  That, combined with a very successful cattle operation over the years, gives Mary the experience and initiative to easily handle the issues facing us these days.
