On May 14, 1945, Redding had a population of 7,000 and Redding Memorial Hospital opened their doors with 44 beds, 10 doctors, 12 RN’s and 12 aides. Every room had air conditioning and state-of-the-art air sterilization lamps in the nursery. Owned by Dr. Tom Wyatt, he purchased adjoining property and in 1963, a larger expansion enabled the hospital to be licensed for 132 beds.
In 1986, after a large expansion of the North tower a new 21 bed orthopedic unit brought the bed capacity to 185. Nine years later, in 1995 the hospital celebrated its 50th year with a $35 million dollar expansion with the construction of a new Emergency Department and Outpatient Surgery Center. It also devoted an area for Obstetrics and another for Critical Care bringing the bed capacity to 226 beds.
“For more than seven decades, Shasta Regional Medical Center has been building programs that meet the growing needs of our patients,” said Cyndy Gordon, Chief Executive Officer at SRMC. “Combined with a caring staff, innovative technology and highly skilled physicians, our forward thinking has always been to benefit the health and wellbeing of the people in our community.”
70 years later, Shasta Regional continues its investment in exceptional Cardiovascular Services with the construction of our third Cardiac Catheterization Lab expected to open in August. In addition, we’ve expanded our Interventional Radiology department, a rapidly growing area of medicine performing minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that are often an alternative to surgery, with a $1.2 million dollars investment with state-of-the art advanced imaging technology. In fall of 2015, a 20-bed Geropsychiatric unit, Path to Wellness, will open providing cognitive, emotional and psychological healthcare. This voluntary unit will address both medical and mental health needs of adults 55+.
Today, Redding’s population is more than 92,000 and Shasta Regional Medical Center has grown, with 246 beds, 350 doctors on staff and more than 900 RN’s, technicians and support staff. Shasta Regional has a long-standing tradition of being a cutting-edge healthcare provider, from the moment it opened its doors in 1945, until today and will continue to do so into the future.
