Opportunity Center Celebrates 50 Years

In 1963, Martin Luther King, Junior delivered his “I have a dream” speech, America lost President John F. Kennedy, and the Beatles burst onto the music scene. It’s also when the Shasta County Opportunity Center began. On October 24th the “OC”, as it’s commonly called, will celebrate its 50th anniversary with an open house featuring snacks and tours of the facility

Located at 1265 Redwood Boulevard in north Redding, the Opportunity Center provides employment and training opportunities for people with disabilities. Approximately 250 people received services through the Opportunity Center last fiscal year and an average of 200 adults with disabilities come to the OC every day. The OC provides a number of services such as assembly, packaging, mail room services, document destruction and grounds maintenance. Opportunity Center clients also provide janitorial services to many Shasta County offices and local northstate rest areas. The OC works with many private businesses, organizations and Federal government agencies throughout Shasta County.

“Our clients really love working, earning a paycheck and being productive members of our community. It’s a joy to see the pride with which they do their jobs. It’s really inspiring,” says Jane Work, Opportunity Center Manager.

The public is invited to stop by the Opportunity Center on Thursday, October 24th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm to see just how far the OC has come in the past half century.
