Cyclist Dies in South Redding Collision with Train

Redding Police Department officers responded to a train vs. bicyclist traffic collision on the train tracks just east of S/R 273, north of Canyon Road and south of the Clear Creek Bridge. Witnesses stated a Union Pacific train was traveling north on the railroad tracks approaching the Canyon Road area. At the same time, an unknown white male adult was riding a mountain bike along the east side of the tracks. The train sounded its horns numerous times without success. It appeared the bicyclist did not hear the train. The train was unable to stop in time and collided with the bicyclist.

The collision caused the bicyclist to be thrown into the air. The bicyclist landed on the east side of the railroad tracks. The bicyclist suffered major head injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene.

The identification of the bicyclist is being withheld until the Shasta County Coroner’s Office contacts the next of kin.
