I am always happy to report when there is too much to do on a weekend in the North State. Fortunately, you can fit all three of these weekend events into your schedule:
Friday: Life Beyond the Wall
Redding’s loss is Crescent City’s gain when actress Susan Daugherty makes her way to the coast for new adventures. But not before mesmerizing us one last time with her portrayal of Shirley Valentine, her one-woman show at the Riverfront Playhouse.
Susan, a Riverfront regular with a decade of roles, including “Misery,” “The Mousetrap” and “Cut to the Chase,” is brilliant as Shirley, a middle-aged Liverpool housewife who thinks that her time for adventures has past. She accepts an invitation to travel to Greece and explores what her life could have been.
Even Susan admits that she “pulled a Shirley Valentine” when her path to life in the theater diverged. I think that makes her an ideal candidate to reveal that there’s a little Shirley Valentine in all of us.

Saturday: Commune with Mother Earth
Visit the Whole Earth and Watershed Festival and learn how to live healthier, save money and energy and protect our natural resources. The Festival includes an eARTh show of recycled or sustainable work by local artists, more than 90 exhibitors, including a wide range of government agencies, businesses, educational organizations, and local non-profits, great food from local restaurants, and a Sustainable Living Demonstration Tent with a variety of practical tips to help you live more sustainably. Also enjoy live music throughout the day, a chance to provide the ultimate in recycling at the Blood Source Bloodmobile, an E-Waste drop-off, a variety of children and youth activities, and of course the Capital Farmers Market.
This year, the Whole Earth and Watershed Festival partnered with the 2010 Shasta College Sustainability Conference to present a Green Film Series. Included in the series is “No Impact Man.” This film tells the story of Colin Beavan and his decision to completely eliminate his personal impact on the environment for a full year. See the film and take the one-week “no impact challenge.”

Sunday: Inspired “Nests”
Tour four of Redding’s unique homes — including a 1926 Craftsman-style jewel, a shabby-chic emporium and an antique-lover’s dream — during the 2010 Home Hop. Formerly the Cottage Tour, the event is organized by the Shop Hop, a collaboration of Redding-area independent shops and boutiques.
After you develop a serious case of house envy, stop by the Home Hop’s Artisan Faire, featuring refreshments, live music and work by local artists.
All proceeds from the 2010 Home Hop benefit the Shasta Women’s Refuge.
