This sounds like one of those “Dumb Crook News” items I feature on my Home Front blog, but it happened right here in Redding:
A Redding man went downtown the other day for a court appearance related to his five arrests for driving with a suspended license. Deputies from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office say they watched as Bryant Robert Krause, 19, left the courthouse and got behind the wheel of a vehicle. When he drove away, they pulled him over and arrested him for driving on a suspended license. Straight to jail, do not pass Go, etc.
Perhaps Mr. Krause should seek alternate modes of transportation. Especially when visiting the courthouse.
- Weather: Monday should be a short-sleeves day in Redding, with partly cloudy skies and a high of 76. Breezy today, but the winds are supposed to really kick up on Tuesday. A blustery week, and they’re still predicting showers for Halloween. Sigh.
- Mark Your Calendar for Sunday, when the Shasta Symphony begins its 60th season with a special concert sponsored by Noble and Sally Streeter in memory of their grandson, Derek Abraham. The orchestra will play “Puck,” composed by Michael Djukstrom, with a special performance by Derek’s trumpet teacher, Rick Leder. Also featured will be Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony. The 3:15 p.m. concert will be at the Shasta College Theatre. Tickets ($12 general/$10 students and seniors) are on sale at the college box office or click here.
- Sports: The Yankees beat the Angels to advance to the World Series against the defending champion Phillies; Game One is Wednesday. In the NFL, previously undefeated Minnesota fell to my mighty Pittsburgh Steelers in the best game of the day. Niners lost, 24-21, to the Texans, though they were given a boost by the insertion of QB Alex Smith in the second half. Smith did great until he threw the interception that lost the game. Aaugh, now we have a loss and a QB controversy. Probably better if we don’t mention the Raiders game at all. Tonight: Philadelphia at Washington. Wake me when it’s over.
- Fun With Facebook: I’ve written before about how much I like Facebook’s “hide” function that allows me to shield myself from other people’s stupid, stupid games, quizzes, “cocktails” and other apps, and how much I’d like to apply “hide” to everyday life. But yesterday I found myself clicking “yes” when asked “Hide POSITIVE THOUGHTS?” That’s just wrong.
- DVD I Watched on the Dreadmill: “Adventureland,” starring Jesse Eisenberg as a shy 22-year-old intellectual (and virgin) who works at a theme park to make money for graduate school. Sweet little rom-com, but the best part of the movie is the screwy supporting cast.
