I stepped outside before dawn this morning (my secret identity: Insomnia Man), and it was cool with a hint of a breeze. Something more there, too. A scent, a taste, something.
Autumn.
After another scorching weekend, Redding finally gets a break this week as a low pressure system swoops down from the Gulf of Alaska. Expect highs around 90 today, then we get a real cool-down on Tuesday with a high of 74 and a chance of showers. Highs in the 70s/low 80s the rest of the week. Down to around 50 at night.
Yum.
- The Shasta Land Trust has completed a conservation easement on the Fall River Ranch in eastern Shasta County. The 436-acre ranch remains in private ownership and will continue to be a working ranch, but the easement assures that it’s protected from development. Through such arrangements, the nonprofit Shasta Land Trust, formed in 1998, has helped protect more than 16,000 acres in the region.
- Monday Morning QB: What a heart-breaking loss for the San Francisco 49ers. Brett Favre worked his old magic with a last-minute drive, and the Minnesota Vikings won a well-played game, 27-24. I think the Niners could’ve won if coach Mike Singletary had thought to take a delay-of-game penalty before that final punt. Would’ve burned more clock and given the punter more room to work. Unfortunately, Singletary could not hear the advice I was giving from my sofa. I couldn’t bear to watch the hapless Raiders fall 23-3 to the Denver Donkos, and I fell asleep watching the Colts stomp the Cards, 31-10. Alas, my Steelers fell again, losing to the lowly Bengals. I weep. Tonight, the Panthers visit the Cowboys on MNF.
- Gimme a ‘U.’ Gimme a ‘G:’ The NFL’s throwback uniform thing has gone too far. It’s time to throw it back. The only thing that soiled the undefeated NY Jets’ 24-17 victory over the Titans were those smudgy black uniforms. Yeesh.
- Dollhouse Raffle: To help Riverfront Playhouse raise money for its new building, Renaissance Redding is raffling off a dollhouse created by John Mathena. This lovely 28-inch-tall dollhouse, valued at $750, is on display at Graphic Emporium, 1525 Pine St. in Redding. Tickets are $2 each (3 for $5, 7 for $10), and the drawing will be Nov. 21.
