Going for the Fake

Our two sons have always preferred their clothes scattered on their bedroom floors rather than hidden away in drawers or closets. They like to have all their clothes spread out so they can do the quick inventory/sniff test and end up in the same shirt every day.

We parents find it bothersome that there are so many clothes covering the floor of any room of our home that you can’t tell whether there’s carpet under there.

This has been a point of contention for years. Whenever a certain parent passes an open bedroom door, he peers in and barks, “Pick up these clothes! Jeez!” This parental maneuver has taught our sons to always keep their bedroom doors closed.

But now they’re getting creative.

Today, I wandered into younger son’s room and found that the clothes on the floor were heaped in one quadrant of the room. The clothes were all on one side of a line, in a perfect angle from the door. Backtracking, I found that this was the one quadrant not visible from the open door.

Ah. The big fake.

If he put that much thought and planning into actually stowing his clothes properly, he could . . . oh, never mind.

  • Driving home from Seattle this week, I saw a tire on a boat trailer blow into a hundred pieces. I honked and alerted the driver, who pulled over safely. The tire was ruined because it rolled over an obstruction in the road: A piece of steel-belted radial. The shoulders of Interstate 5 throughout Washington and Oregon were absolutely covered in tire pieces and other detritus. Makes me want to say thanks to CalTrans, the Adopt-a-Highway program and all the volunteers everywhere who keep California looking so clean.
  • Speaking of CalTrans, highway officials have announced a new round of lane and ramp closures on Highway 44 in Redding as part of the Dana-to-Downtown project. To see the details, click here. The upshot: Avoid the construction zone near Sundial Bridge Drive if you can, especially at night.
  • Next Tuesday, the Redding Library will host another free concert as part of Musical Tuesdays @ the Library. This month’s performer is alternative/acoustic musician Rodney McCormick. Starts at 6 p.m. in the community room. For more info, call 245-7250.
  • The Redding Firefighters Association raised $3,500 for Mercy Foundation North at the recent “Tip-A-Firefighter Night” fundraiser at Logan’s Roadhouse. Way to go! The money will be used to put new TVs in patient rooms. No word on how many firefighters were tipped over at the event. Wait, what?
