Doni asked me to make a couple of Grocery Outlet food picks. Though Doni does most of the cooking in our house, she asked me to select a few picks with a man’s perspective. This is probably the one time you’ll find my writing in the food section so I decided to have a little fun with this project.
I view shopping in two categories. First is what I call the bachelor category. This consists of the three basic food groups: sandwiches, snacks and Ice cream.
The second category is what I refer to as the dating menu. This is where I buy food that is interesting, within my ability to prepare, and it looks good enough to qualify as a romantic evening once the table is set.
For the GO pick I went with the dating menu.
Here’s what I found.
Fresh Fettuccine: $1.59 (elsewhere $3.99)
Parmesan cheese: 1.99 (elsewhere $4.99)
A bag of Romaine lettuce: $1.99
Two hot house tomatoes: 88 cents (elsewhere $1.29)
One zucchini: 25 cents (elsewhere 99 cents)
One onion: 25 cents (elsewhere 99 cents)
One avocado: 89 cents (elsewhere $1.49)
One basket of Strawberries: $1.99 ( elsewhere 3.99)
A bottle of Wine: $4.99 (elsewhere $14.99)
Sharffenberger chocolate: $1.99 (elsewhere $3.99)
Total cost: $16.81
According to Grocery Outlet’s list I would have paid $38.70 somewhere else. For a savings of $21.89. By the way, we had enough left-overs for dinner the next night. That works out to be an entree of fettuccine, a vegetable side, a salad, dessert and wine for $4.20 a plate.
Below are photos of what I bought and a 3-minute video of me preparing a surprise dinner for Doni.
