Economic Stimulus Package Funds Five Northstate Projects

REDDING – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 2 will receive Federal Economic Stimulus funds for five local projects.  This district received approximately $43 million in stimulus funds.

All five projects will address pavement issues and are expected to begin construction this summer.  The projects include:

  • Pavement rehabilitation project on Interstate 5 near Red Bluff, 5.3 miles south of the Adobe Road overcrossing.  Both directions of the highway will be paved, with some bridge deck work also completed.  This is a $38 million project.
  • A 1.7-mile section of roadway on State Route 36 in Plumas County six miles east of Chester on the Johnson Grade. This $1.7 million project will recycle the existing pavement and overlay the roadway with three inches of new asphalt concrete.  This is an environmentally friendly strategy that preserves the states natural resources and reduces costs.
  • Paving will occur on a 3-mile section of SR 99 south of Los Molinos in Tehama County; a six-mile section of SR 32 in Tehama County east of Chico; a 4.5-mile section of SR 70 in Plumas County, east of the Greenville Wye.  The total cost for all areas is $2.8 million.
  • Asphalt rubber chip seal placed on 13 miles of SR 139 in Lassen County between Susanville and Adin.  This type of paving uses a high percentage of recycled tires and depending on traffic volumes, can provide a maintenance free travel way for 10 to 15 years.  This is a $1.3 million project.
  • An additional asphalt rubber chip seal project will be completed on a 20-mile section of US 395 from the Lassen/Modoc County line to three miles south of Alturas.  This is a $1.57 million project.
