Corner Booth: Bandwagon Full of ‘Friends’

OK, I said wasn’t going to write anything about Facebook because Philbert has already been funnier here than I could be. But I’ve got nothing else because I spent the whole weekend setting up my Facebook account and rounding up a number of “friends,” some of whom I’d never even heard of, much less met.

It’s hilarious, I’m sure, to all the younger folks that us over-50 types have finally discovered online social networking. Next we’ll learn how to send text messages with our cell phones and type with our thumbs. The sky’s the limit.

Why did I finally jump onto the Facebook bandwagon? Kelly made me do it. She’s one of those people that sociologists call “early adapters,” always on the cutting edge of technology. I am usually way behind that curve, in the cohort that sociologists call the “whining foot-draggers.”

Anyway, I finally caved in, and it’s been fun and she was right again, dang it. But it once again brings up the differences between the sexes, as the following conversation illustrates:

Me: “I’m up to 150 ‘friends’ in less than 24 hours! Woo-hoo!”

Her: “It’s not a competition.”

Me: “That’s what losers always say.”

Tips appreciated: Send news tidbits to steveb.anewscafe@gmail.com, or I’ll write about Facebook again. Woo-hoo.
