Details: A cast of 13 women will present a one-time performance of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play “The Vagina Monologues” at 7 p.m. Fri., Feb. 20, at the State Theatre in Red Bluff.

The performance is a benefit for Alternatives to Violence, the Tehama County agency that helps men and women who are experiencing domestic violence in their lives.

Last year more than 4,000 worldwideV-Day benefits helped raise funds and awareness for the issue. Since 1998, V-Day events have raised over $60 million for local beneficiaries working to end violence against women and girls.

The play is directed by Tina Zastrow and stage manager is Danna Swanenberg, both of Red Bluff.
“The Vagina Monologues” are based on a series of interviews by Ensler with women of all ages, races, professions and economic status. They were first performed 11 years ago off-Broadway by Ensler, and have since been seen all over the world, performed both by local and celebrity casts.

The Red Bluff cast will perform some of the most popular readings, some poignant, many hilariously funny, a few showing the devastating pain of abuse, rape, and intolerance. Each monologue tells the story of one woman’s experience. The content is mature; parental guidance is suggested.

The performance will include a six-minute video about violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo where more than 300-thousand women have been raped, tortured and destroyed since 1988.

An art exhibit titled “Celebration of Women” will be on display in the State Theatre lobby as part of the V-Day event. It features 81 works of art depicting women, including sculpture, paintings, and photography. The “V” in V-Day stands for Valentine, Victory, and Vagina.
