Shasta Food Group Summer Food Drive Runs Thursday

What: Shasta Food Group Summer Food Drive
When: Thursday, July 21, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Multiple drop-off locations; see below.

The Shasta Food Group will kick off its 11th annual countywide Summer Food Drive on Thursday, July 21, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Throughout the day, Shasta Food Group will accept donations of canned food and non-perishable grocery items at the Mt. Shasta Mall from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other drop-off sites include locations in Anderson, Shasta Lake and Burney and Fall River (see list below). All donations will go to local food pantries to help the more than 85,000 Shasta County residents who experience food shortages sometime during the year.

“Summers are tough for our food banks,” says Deb Arias, of the Shasta Food Group. “Donations go down dramatically and demands increase because fewer children have access to free or reduced school meals.” Shasta County food banks report that 50% of the people who benefit from their services are children.

The Shasta Food Group, a group of food banks, faith-based organizations, community members, health and nutrition educators and non-profit agencies, encourages other businesses to start their own challenge to collect the most food to help our community’s working poor and seniors. Convenient drop-off locations and an early start time make it easy for people to participate in this year’s crusade against hunger. Items in high demand include: whole grain cereals, canned vegetables or fruit, peanut butter, beans and canned meat and fish. “Food pantries also appreciate fresh produce,” added Arias. “Local gardeners are encouraged to donate their extra produce to one of our many food pantries.”
