A new exhibit called “The Scoop on Poop — The Science of What Animals Leave Behind” has opened at Turtle Bay Exploration Park, and should be popular with schoolkids for its high “ewww” factor.
The traveling exhibit, based on a book by Dr. Wayne Lynch, explores the ways we learn about the natural world through animal scat and the way animals have adapted to use dung in their lives.
Along with the info you might expect — dung beetles, dinosaur poop, giant elephant droppings — the exhibit also includes displays on veterinarians’ detective work, the language of poop all over the world and “stool school.” I am not making this up.
Admission to all Turtle Bay exhibits is $13 for adults and $9 for children. For more information, click here.
- You can visit Turtle Bay for FREE on Oct. 3 when Healthy Shasta presents the 4th annual Walk This Way at Turtle Bay celebration from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The event includes health screenings, nutrition information, cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts, and activities for the kids. The Dance Project performs at 11 a.m. and there will be other entertainment throughout the day. For more info on events and sponsors, click here.
- I spent all weekend watching football on TV, becoming so “at one” with the sofa that Kelly had to pry me loose with a spatula. How about them Niners? I never would’ve predicted they’d be 2-0. Someone needs to explain to Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell that the point of passing is to throw it to the receivers; he apparently thinks he’s in an extended game of keep-away. And the Giants ruined the regular-season debut of Jerry Jones’ Palace in Dallas by beating the Cowboys at the last second. Couldn’t happen to a nicer megalomaniac.
- What I’m Reading: Finally got around to “Whiteman,” the debut novel by part-time North State resident Tony D’Souza. I love stories set in Africa, and this one’s excellent.
