Here’s some news: State Highway 44 will be completely closed overnight at the Sundial Bridge overpass on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
All lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. those nights while crews remove the forms used to build the new overpass. On- and off-ramps will be open and detours will be in place, but you might want to avoid the area. Remember that the speed limit is 45 mph through the Dana-to-Downtown construction zone.
- Doni, Kelly and the rest of the gang from A News Cafe close out the latest run of Cooking at the Cascade at 7 p.m. tonight at the lovely Cascade Theatre downtown. The movie will be “Spanglish,” starring Tea Leoni, Adam Sandler and Paz Vega. Drink demonstration by Tapas Downtown, food by Vintage Wine Bar, service by those wacky Cascade ushers and A News Cafe volunteers. I have been told that I’ve volunteered to wear an apron. UPDATE: Cooking at the Cascade went off without a hitch, and I did indeed wear an apron and mince about on stage like a particularly ungainly dancing bear. You shoulda been there.
- Shasta County Superior Court has announced that it will be closed the third Wednesday of each month, starting Sept. 16, as part of the state budget cuts.
- Time for another big closeout sale by the Friends of the Library. Hardbacks for 50 cents and paperbacks for 25 cents. Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Redding Library community room. Hotcha.
- Speaking of the library, next Tuesday is Musical Tuesday at the Library, featuring the rock music of The Lottery at 6 p.m. in the Children’s Garden. I have no “close” gag for this one.
- We’re closing in on the Aug. 11 release of the DVD based on my book “Lonely Street.” You should all run right out and order some DVDs or ask your DVD service to “save” one for you. This little movie needs all the help it can get. Comedy stars Jay Mohr, Joe Mantegna, Robert Patrick, Katt Williams, Lindsay Price. They spell my name in neon on the “based on the novel” part, and there’s a sign in the movie that says “Brewer Library.” Har. UPDATE: The Memphis Commercial Appeal just posted a very nice article about Robert Patrick, who plays the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in “Lonely Street.” Click here.
