The California Department of Transportation has drafted a new “concept report” on how to manage State Highway 99 through Tehama County and make the treacherous stretch of road safer.
CalTrans is slated to present the plan to various public bodies in the county over the next few weeks. Here’s the schedule:
July 23 — Corning City Council, 7:30 p.m.
July 30 — Tehama County Board of Supervisors, 10 a.m.
July 7 — Red Bluff City Council, 7 p.m.
July 14 — Tehama City Council, 6:30 p.m.
Copies of the draft plan are available on the Internet. Click here.
- So long to Ed McMahon, one of the great sidekicks of all time, who always managed to make Johnny Carson look good on “The Tonight Show.” McMahon passed away at age 86.
- Name of the Day: In today’s local paper, they quote a corn-dog dealer named Travis Franks.
- What I’m Reading: “A Darker Domain” by the excellent Scottish crime writer Val McDermid. Before that, I read “Fault Line” by Barry Eisler. I love Eisler’s series featuring assassin John Rain, but found this new standalone to be a little flat. The action sequences were good, but the back story about family strife felt like it went on forever.
- DVD I Watched on the Dreadmill: “The Friends of Eddie Coyle,” starring Robert Mitchum and directed by Peter Yates. In this 1973 crime drama, based on the great George V. Higgins novel, Mitchum plays a low-level gangster who gets in over his head running guns to bank robbers. Some great lines, including one where Mitchum tells a young guy: “I could explain married life to you, but we don’t have that kind of time and you wouldn’t believe it anyway.”
