Corner Booth: Topless Mall

The roof is finally off Redding’s Downtown Mall, and the city will mark completion of the project next Thursday with a 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The ceremony, which will be at the south end of the mall near Placer Street, comes almost exactly a year after a “roof-breaking” that kicked off the project. The removal of the roof fully opens the pedestrian mall to the sky for the first time since 1975.

The next phase of the project will be to connect the remaining concrete columns with a winding art corridor.

  • Mark your calendars for another event next week. On Saturday, June 27, Shasta County Public Health will offer free HIV testing at two locations. This is part of National HIV Testing Day, and all at-risk people are urged to get the tests. For more information, call Heidi Vert at 225-5298.
  • Fun with Craigslist: In the “free” section of the Redding listings, we find this —  Fencing for kindling. No matter how badly you need kindling, I see no reason to resort to swordplay.
  • Wise words from a Facebook friend: “Some people are like Slinkies: not really good for anything, but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.”
